The SRTF Delivers Wheat Hessian Sacks for a Food Security Project in Aleppo Countryside

Turkey – Sunday, 29 October 2017 - The SRTF Management Unit delivered 220.000 hessian sacks to the implementing entity (IE), of its “Enhancing Food Security of Aleppo and Idleb Governorates” project during the past couple of days. The hessian sacks will help Syrian farmers better store their wheat harvests. The delivery took place at a zero point on the Turkish-Syrian border in coordination with the Turkish authorities. As the last delivery of hessian sacks of this project, it complements an earlier shipment of more than 336,000 hessian sacks delivered to the IE last August to help collect, store and distribute locally produced wheat.

The project aims to address the current food insecurity crisis in the targeted areas by increasing the availability of wheat flour for bread production. It will also help the IE collect data on wheat production and warehousing capabilities in the targeted areas. It will also enhance its ability to help farmers increase their local production and improve their storage and marketing skills.

The project is expected to support community resilience, increase employment and income generation opportunities and boost the local economy to the benefit of some 2 million inhabitants of the project’s target areas.
