Home Gardens and Custom Home Repairs for Urban Households – Phase II
Addressing the issue of stabilization in areas liberated from Daesh is a vital priority as more and more formerly displaced civilians return to their homes in Ar-Raqqa. These civilians continue to face a myriad of hardships and challenges to their livelihoods including lack of access to sufficient food, water, shelter, and other key needs. A crucial need remains to ensure their long-term resilience and livelihoods.
Through this intervention, the SRTF will build on the accomplishments of the existing Phase I of this project, benefiting up to 4,300 households and 25,000 family members on this round with assistance packages and activities that are designed to enhance recovery and strengthen the resilience of residents in urban and peri-urban areas.
The proposed activities within phase II will continue to support the restoration of dignified living conditions in private homes and increase access to diversified food items through the Home Garden activity. Implementation of activities will be carried out by the same International NGO which established experience and contextualized knowledge about targeted communities and their environment. The SRTF support will enable the Implementing entity (IE) to contribute effectively to improving the living conditions of the targeted beneficiaries through the following activities:
- Procurement and distribution of Home Garden Kits, which contain seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, materials for a drip irrigation system, agricultural tools and materials to cover around 20 square meters (0.02 dunum) of land.
- Capacity development training on home gardening techniques, climate-smart agriculture, planting, growing and cultivating of vegetables, seeds, and nutritional practices.
- Procurement and distribution of Home Repair Support Packages or cash grants to facilitate beneficiary led household repairs. Including window and door replacement / installation, plastering of unfinished surfaces, repairs to concrete walls and roofs, plumbing repairs to kitchens and latrines or installation of missing items, basic electrical wiring repair, improved ventilation, sealing the roof slab with liquid bitumen, caulking, filling cracks, holes, roof reinforcement, reinforcement of roof-wall joints, pavement or floor resurfacing, installation of moveable partitions, etc.
- Cash-for-work activities that support the social and economic recovery of communities. These activities include rehabilitation of schools, cleaning of irrigation canal, and other activities that will be determined based on group discussions.
With a total budget of EUR. 3.7 million and a six months duration, phase II is expected to positively impacting the local economy in these locations and providing safer access for Syrians returning to their homes after displacement.
