The Management Committee of SRTF Approves Three New Projects Addressing Urgent Food Security Needs in Syria

Gaziantep – Wednesday, 18 December 2014 - The Management Committee (MC) of the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) concluded a teleconference connecting various capitals today with the approval of 3 new projects to help secure food availability to the people in Syria. The projects were developed and approved in response to a recent announcement by the Syrian Interim Government declaring food security a high priority and urging for immediate action to remedy supply shortages in Syria.

Worth a total of Euro 12.4 million, the three projects include i) Support to the National Wheat Procurement Project in Aleppo, Dar’a and Idleb Governorates; ii) Procurement of Hessian Sacks for 2015 Wheat Crops in the Governorates of Aleppo, Dar’a and Idleb; and iii) Reestablishment of the Livestock Vaccination Program in Selected Locations in the Idleb Governorate. The first project, Support to the National Wheat Procurement Project, passed through a fast track approval process at MC due to the urgency of dealing with the current food insecurity situation in Syria. Under this project, around 12,500 metric tons of wheat will be imported through Turkey. Turkey’s Government will provide buffer storage facilities to facilitate entry and delivery of wheat to the needy communities in Syria. This will directly benefit over 100,000 people, primarily women and children for months.

Enabling local communities to address some of the bottlenecks of their food production and supply systems, the other two projects, are expected to benefit more than 74,000 farming families (about 444,000 people) directly.

The new SRTF interventions bring the total number of its approved activities to 15 projects worth a total of approximately Euro 32 million.

The next meeting of the MC is planned to take place in Abu Dhabi in February 2015.
