The SRTF Management Committee Approves Its First Projects in Hama Governorate and Its First Solid Waste Management Projects in Syria
Gaziantep – Sunday, 21 June 2015 – The SRTF Management Committee (MC) has approved three new projects, including two first time projects in the Governorate of Hama. Worth a total of Euro 4.64 million, the three projects include the SRTF’s first two projects in the “Solid Waste Management” sector.
“Providing a Hospital in Hama Governorate with Orthopedic implants and Devices” project aims to procure and supply one year’s worth of orthopedic implant consumables for one hospital in Hama Governorate through the project’s implementing entity (IE). The IE will receive and distribute the orthopedic implants to the selected hospital on a semi-annual basis within two weeks of receiving the goods. This project will help carry out about 6.000 orthopedic surgeries helping the hospitals provide adequate treatment for some 5.000 patients per year.
The Governorate of Hama will also benefit from one of the first SRTF waste management projects in Syria. The “Solid Waste Management and Rubble Removal in 10 Communities in Hama Governorate” project aims to improve the quality of life of some project aims to improve the quality of life of some 90,000 inhabitants in the target areas by enhancing the solid waste and rubble removal operations
These efforts have become indispensable after the outbreak of the conflict due to accumulation of waste and rubbles causing health hazards, spread of diseases and degradation of hygiene levels.
The “Solid Waste Management in 10 Communities in Aleppo Governorate” project will also address similar pressing conditions of uncontrolled waste disposal, accumulation of debris and wide spread proliferation of disease carrying insects. As in the case of the Hama waste management project, this project in Aleppo will supply the implanting entity with plastic bags, containers for waste collection, hydraulic refuse collection vehicles to transport waste, equipment to spray insecticides, support for rehabilitation and proper management of the landfill, introduction of a training & capacity-building programme for staff, support to improve pest control and prevent epidemics caused by pests, etc. The project is expected to directly benefit some 80,000 people in the target areas.
