The SRTF Management Committee Approves a New Euro 2.3 Million Project for Solid Waste Management in Aleppo

Gaziantep – Monday, 10 September 2015 – The SRTF Management Committee has approved a major solid waste management intervention to deal with the drastic deterioration of sanitary and hygienic conditions in Aleppo city. Worth a total of Euro 2,293,750, the new “Solid Waste Removal and Management in Aleppo City” project will provide the necessary funding and support for waste collection and management services. which the regime in Damascus had ceased to provide following the outbreak of the conflict.

Inspite of many constraints determined by the conflict, the Aleppo Local Council (ALC) maintains a number of volunteers who continue using all available means to remove waste from residential areas and provide some level of protection to public health. However, due to the lack of equipment and funding, the services provided are not enough to adequately mitigate the current public health risks. Therefore,This project will enhance the capacities of the ALC

with the required equipment and materials, including trash bins with hydraulic refuse collection vehicles to transport waste; front–end loaders, skid steer loaders and tippers to transport waste from temporary landfill to a permanent, secure landfill; and support for preliminary rehabilitation and proper management of the landfill.

The lack of serviceable waste collection trucks and other waste hauling equipment has forced volunteers to rely on de facto landfills as interim measures. It is expected that when trucks are made available these two temporary mounds of waste shall be moved to an earmarked landfill location, an approximately four hectares of land distant from residential areas.

This project will enhance the capacities ALC, recognized as a legitimate local institution that provides basic public services for all and identified as a connector among the population. All areas of the targeted communities will be served with no feeling of inequality. The current population of the target area is 450,000 residents, distributed among seven districts and subdivided into 62 neighborhoods. will be the direct beneficiaries of the project.
