The SRTF Delivers Waste Containers to Hama Governorate
Turkey – Friday, 12 August 2016 – The SRTF Management Unit today delivered some 220 waste containers and bins to the implementing entity of its “Solid Waste Management and Rubble Removal in 10 Communities of Hama Governorate” project. The delivery took place at a zero point on the Turkish-Syrian borders in coordination with the Turkish authorities.
Worth approximately EUR 2.16 million, the project aims to reinstate the waste management sector in the targeted communities enabling it to overcome the health problems and the spread of diseases (such as leishmaniasis) associated with the pile up of waste and degradation hygiene levels in these areas.
The delivered waste containers will replace those destroyed during the conflict as they were misappropriated and used as barriers by fighting factions. The project will also supply waste collection vehicles and tools in replacement of those destroyed or stolen during the conflict. It will also provide the implementing entity with proper equipment and pesticides to deal with the spread of rodents and insects. In addition, the project will rehabilitate waste landfills and offer training in proper landfill management.
As a result of this project the livelihood of some 104,000 people living in the targeted communities will greatly improve in quality terms thanks to the enhancement of solid waste and rubble removal activities of the project.
