The SRTF Delivers Waste Containers to Local Communities in the Aleppo Countryside
Turkey – Thursday, 25 August 2016 – The SRTF Management Unit has delivered 170 waste containers to various communities in the Aleppo countryside over the past two days. The delivery took place at a zero point on the Turkish-Syrian borders in coordination with the Turkish authorities.
The new delivery was planned under the SRTF “Solid Waste Management in 10 Communities of Aleppo Governorate”, which aims to combat the proliferation of diseases resulting from waste accumulation that was caused by the regime’s suspension of waste removal and sanitation services in opposition held areas. In order to ensure public health, the project seeks to reestablish cleaning and waste management services with the appropriate equipment and functional vehicles for waste collection and landfill management.
Worth approximately EUR 1.75 million, the project provides the local communities with biodegradable waste collection bags, waste containers, hydraulic refuse collection vehicles to transport waste, equipment to spray insecticides, rehabilitation of landfills and local capacity-building and training programmes. To the benefit of some 80,000 inhabitants of these communities, the project will improve public health through pest control and prevention of epidemics caused by pests (e.g. cholera and leishmaniasis) and proper management of solid waste and waste landfills.
