The SRTF Approves Two New Solar Power Projects to Enhance Healthcare Services in Northeast and Northwest Syria
Türkiye – Friday, 25 February 2023 – Alongside the SRTF’s emergency response plans for Phases I and II efforts for the earthquake, the SRTF is pleased to announce the approval of two new electricity projects that will promote sustainable and reliable sources of energy solutions in Northeast and Northwest of Syria. In addition to ensuring improved health care services, these projects are a significant step towards building resilient communities that can withstand the impact of natural disasters and other emergencies.
The first approved intervention “Providing Solar Power and Clean Water to Health Centres in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor” has a total budget of € 430,155 and is aimed at providing solar power and clean water to 14 health centres in surrounding villages in both Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor, to address the increasing demand for reliable electricity and clean water sources in these facilities. The targeted health facilities provide essential medical services to patients seeking treatment and healthcare in (NES). The upgrades to the facilities will directly benefit 403 staff members currently working at the 14 targeted health centers, along with 20,200 patients visiting the centres on average per month. Access to potable water and extended electricity supply hours will significantly improve the quality of patient services and is expected to reduce morbidity rates.
Moreover, the project will indirectly benefit 58,909 people by providing better healthcare services and promoting the use of sustainable energy solutions. The SRTF's approval of this project is a significant step towards ensuring the provision of basic health services to communities, promoting sustainable energy solutions, and improving the quality of life for those in need.
The second approved project by the SRTF is “Installing Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems to Operate Health Facilities in Northern Aleppo”. The project will be implemented through a three-phased approach aimed at promoting the use of renewable energy solutions to empower 30 health systems in nine districts in North-West Syria (NWS). The expected outcomes of the project are to promote the use of photovoltaic (PV) systems, strengthen the capacity and raise awareness of key stakeholders on the importance of using safe, renewable energy, and managing the PV systems. Additionally, the project will perform an impact study to demonstrate the effectiveness of installing solar PV systems in health facilities.
With a budget of EUR 1,35 million, this project is estimated to directly benefit 462,150. Indirectly, a population of 968,064; out of which 376,681 are host community residents and 591,383 are IDPs are expected to benefit from this project.
The Director General of the SRTF Eng. Hani Khabbaz commented on this occasion saying: "While we continue to support the survivors of the recent earthquake, we remain committed to the long-term sustainability and capacity building of primary healthcare facilities in the Northeast and Northwest regions of Syria. Our goal is to improve healthcare services and reduce morbidity rates through the implementation of projects that will enhance the facilities' infrastructure, including the installation of solar power systems and RO water purification systems. We are dedicated to this effort and believe that it will make a significant impact on the health and well being of the communities we serve."
