An SRTF Agriculture Project Receives Fungicides, Insecticides and Laser Land Leveling Machines in Northern Aleppo
Türkiye – Tuesday, 16 May 2023 – The SRTF announced the delivery of 4,800 packages of fungicides and 800 litres of insecticides to the Implementing Entity (IE), under its Agriculture project, “Support to Potato Producers in Northern Aleppo – Phase II”, today.
These are critical to protecting potatoes from fungal diseases, as they can be used in a variety of ways depending on the severity of the infestation and the timing of application.
Earlier this season, five agricultural laser land leveling machines were also delivered under this project. These machines level the cultivated land in order to create a slope in accordance with the present land surface, allowing water to reach the depth of the root zone of the plant with equal distribution, without losing water or eroding the soil. This ensures the production of potatoes, harvested by 1,000 farmers, in the optimum quality.
The use of such equipment contributes to the aim of improving production, as well as the overall aim of the project of improving farmers’ and their communities’ social standards and financial conditions, thereby, revitalising food security in the region. Additionally, these farmers are trained on Climate Smart Agriculture, which enables them to enhance their skills and capacity thereby increasing their potato production.
This project has a budget of around EUR 2 million, and directly benefits 1,000 farmers and their families, as well as over 24,000 indirect beneficiaries, over a period of 18 months. The improved produce increases the availability of potatoes across local markets, thereby, benefiting over 800,000 internally displaced people residing in local communities.
