Electricity Intervention Progress: Installation and Connection Underway in Health Facilities across Northeast Syria via SRTF Efforts

Northeast Syria – Thursday, 17 August 2023 – The SRTF announced the continuation of installation and connection works under its Electricity intervention, “Providing Solar Power and Clean Water to Health Centres in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor”.

Water purification systems are being installed in 14 sites, while solar systems are being installed in seven of those sites. This comes after the completion of construction works including the installation of a concrete foundation, concrete bases for water tanks, water storage systems, earthing systems and battery stands, as well as fabricating solar stands, procuring the necessary equipment and finalising excavation works.

Once the installations are completed, the water purification and solar systems will be tested, to ensure their efficiency, after which the intervention will go through full closure.

The overall aim of this intervention is to provide solar power and clean water to 14 health centres in villages in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor, to meet the increased demand for reliable electricity and clean water sources in those facilities. This will allow the facilities to provide essential medical services to patients effectively and with optimum care while decreasing the spread of waterborne diseases and reducing morbidity rates, especially given the increased access to potable water and extended electricity supply hours, as well as the provision of technical training sessions to the relevant staff on the best practices for operating and maintaining the installed systems.

With a budget of around EUR 430,000, the improvements to the 14 facilities will directly benefit 403 staff members and an average of 20,200 patients visiting the centres per month, over a period of 12 months including one month for preparation and six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation. An additional 58,000 individuals in surrounding communities will also benefit indirectly through the provision of improved basic health services while promoting the use of sustainable energy solutions, thereby, improving the lives of thousands in the targeted communities.
