Creating Job Opportunities and Brighter Futures: Eight Schools’ Renovation Works Completed in Northern Aleppo
Türkiye – Wednesday, 11 October 2023 – The SRTF is delighted to announce the successful completion of rehabilitation works at eight Schools in North Aleppo as part of Phase I of its Cash-for-Work (CfW) project “Rehabilitation of Ten (10) Schools in Rural Areas of North Aleppo”. This effort, with a budget of EUR 1 million, aimed to improve the livelihoods and economic stability of targeted communities in North Aleppo while ensuring improved access to safer learning environments for students.
A vital component of this project provided 195 beneficiaries with wages to carry out restoration and repair works. The repair included walls, ceilings, doors, windows, flooring, lighting, gates and playgrounds. The project targeted skilled and semi-skilled workers for these jobs which enabled them to secure a basic income for their families through legally paid work while also benefiting the students attending these schools with access to a safer and more suitable learning environment.
During project implementation, nine additional classrooms and six additional washrooms were approved to be renovated in six of the eight selected schools. This expansion aimed to solve the issue of overcrowded classrooms, creating a better and more hygienic educational environment for students. With these enhancements, students in North Aleppo now have greater access to quality education, which will undoubtedly shape their futures for the better.
In addition to the direct beneficiaries, which include around 5,560 students attending these schools, during its 24-month life cycle, this project will indirectly benefit 30,050 community members.
On this occasion, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, Director General (DG) of the SRTF stated, “The SRTF is proud of this project that not only brought life back to these schools but also improved the livelihood of thousands of families through job creation in response to the severe unemployment and poverty rates in the targeted areas.”
