Empowering Communities: Successful Conclusion of an SRTF Health Intervention in Ar-Raqqa Northeast Syria
Ar-Raqqa – Tuesday, 9 January 2024 – The SRTF announced the successful closure of the intervention: “Supporting Health Services in Ar-Raqqa Governorate – Phase V” today.
This intervention provided essential and life-saving health services in multiple locations within the Ar-Raqqa governorate, including out-patient (internal medicine, gynaecology and paediatric) diagnosis and treatment services, in all supported seven (7) primary healthcare centres (PHCCs).
Specifically, it provided medication, medical equipment, consumables and laboratory equipment, established one cardiothoracic ward and one COVD-19 ward and provided various health services at one hospital in targeted areas.
It also provided healthcare services including testing, malnutrition screening for children under five and pregnant and lactating women, counselling sessions, diagnostic services, infant and young child feeding consultations, natural deliveries, and health awareness sessions to beneficiaries and training sessions to the relevant medical staff at the seven PHCCs.
Such support has allowed for the provision of services within all facilities at an optimal level, thereby, increasing individuals’ access to improved healthcare and enhancing the overall health conditions within the targeted areas.
The intervention has not only contributed to improving the overall well-being of the community, but it has also successfully provided stable work opportunities to 244 staff members, thereby supporting the resilience of the community. Notably, the intervention has achieved 100% of its recruitment target, further reinforcing its positive impact on both individual well-being and the local economy, aligning with the broader agenda of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 - Good Health and Well-being and with SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth.
One male patient expressed his satisfaction with the project services saying: “I feel comfortable and stable because of the free services provided by the health facility. I no longer worry about the cost of medical treatments even though I do not have good financial means. I no longer feel anxious when one of my children gets sick and I cannot treat them because I do not have money. Now, I feel happy because I can guarantee my family is in good health.”
A female patient shared: “The existence of the health centre has a positive impact on us and on people of the region, as it provides free medical services (examinations, medicine, medical tests), and we also feel safe and stable because of the emergency services and the paramedics that are available 24/7.”
With an amended budget of EUR 1.78 million, this intervention benefited 211,996 unique patients directly and 435,836 individuals indirectly over a period of six months.
