The SRTF Approves Phase VII of a Food Security Project in Northern Aleppo
Amman – Sunday, 28 January 2024 – The SRTF’s Management Committee (MC) approved Phase VII of the Food Security project, “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate”, which aims to replenish stocks of soft wheat to avoid a shortage of flour supply available for bakeries and maintain bread availability in the targeted communities, particularly focusing on areas with high concentrations of Internally Displace Persons (IDPs).
Based on the successes of the previous phases and in coordination with the Syrian Public Establishment for Grains (SPEG), this phase aims to support the Food Security sector in response to the unstable and low cereal crop production and yield resulting from the escalation in conflict, climate change and frequent droughts and the earthquake that hit Northern Syria in February 2023. This has also impacted residents of the area, as thousands of them have become displaced, thereby, increasing the need for food assistance across the region, as farmers’ access to resources, production inputs and markets has become a greater challenge.
As SPEG has already procured 10,000 MT of local hard wheat, the SRTF will provide 4,000 MT of soft wheat to ensure the necessary blend for the mixture to be milled into flour by six SRTF-supported mills, which is then supplied to five bakeries for the production and distribution of bread across seven locations. This will, in turn, strengthen SPEG’s capacity to improve food security within the areas of operation.
The SRTF’s Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz expressed his gratitude to members of the MC, saying: “This project will not only secure the continuity of bread availability for residents and IDPs, but it will also encourage farmers to reactivate local markets and ensure the sustainability of wheat yield and bread production, thereby, enhancing two of the most critical sectors in the area; Food Security and Agriculture. The SRTF will continue supporting such crucial activities, contributing to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people.”
For a budget of EUR 1.38 million, this project is expected to benefit 300,000 monthly beneficiaries. The total project duration is eight months, including six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation. Thousands of other individuals in the area will benefit from improved food security and well-being, the reactivation of the economy and long-term sustainability.
