The SRTF Commences Activities Under A New Livelihoods Intervention in Deir-ez-Zor in Northeast Syria

Northeast Syria – Tuesday, 30 April 2024 – The SRTF announced the start of activities under its new Livelihoods intervention; “Enhancing Shelter and Livelihood in Deir-ez-Zor Governorate”.

The activities commenced with the inspection of 290 houses, whereby 70 were selected, based on agreed-upon selection criteria, to undergo rehabilitation works which started in 28 of them. The rehabilitation process will include civil works, water and sanitation works, and electrical works, to make the houses more livable for the families. Additionally, 125 individuals started Cash-for-Work (CfW) activities including cleaning main streets and schools.

This intervention aims to improve living conditions within local communities in Deir-ez-Zor Governorate, focusing on supporting and empowering returnees from one refugee camp in Northeast Syria, internally displaced people (IDPs), and women. This is done through the rehabilitation of up to 1,000 homes, the introduction of livelihood opportunities to 850 households by implementing small-scale agricultural yards and hydroponic units to offer innovative and sustainable cultivation methods, and finally by offering 2,000 individuals CfW opportunities to support returnees in reintegrating into their communities.

During the Working Group on Stabilisation of the Global Coalition Against Daesh, the Director General of the SRTF Eng. Hani Khabbaz conveyed his great pride in the initiative, stating, "I am thrilled to announce the commencement of activities of the first phase of our multi-phased initiative focused on shelter rehabilitation and livelihood intervention in Deir-ez-Zor Governorate. This comprehensive program aims to effectively meet the needs of returnees and foster stability within the communities of return. Through the rehabilitation of homes, we will improve living conditions and provide a sense of stability and security. Additionally, we are creating various livelihood opportunities to promote economic growth and self-sufficiency. This integrated approach ensures a holistic and sustainable stability for the returned and communities of return."  He added: “We plan to launch Phase Two of the initiative later this year”.

With a budget of EUR 2.4 million, this intervention is expected to directly benefit a total of 10,550 individuals and an estimated 56,240 individuals indirectly, over its six-month lifecycle, in four targeted communities in Deir-ez-Zor.
