The SRTF's MC Endorses Solar Energy for Mill Operations Among Three Newly Approved Projects

Frankfurt – Sunday, 19 May 2024 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund’s (SRTF’s) Management Committee (MC) held its 36th Meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. During the meeting, the SRTF’s Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz briefed members about the SRTF’s operational updates and challenges and the impact on beneficiary communities across Northeast and Northwest Syria.

The MC members made several decisions including the approval of three new projects and interventions; two under the Stabilisation Programme to promote the Health and Agriculture sectors and one to enhance the Electricity sector under the Recovery Programme. The new addition of projects increases the total number of SRTF-approved projects to 70 with a total budget of EUR 266.46 million

The two stabilisation interventions include firstly, “Agricultural Support to Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates- Phase VIII.” With a total budget of EUR 3 million, Phase Eight of this intervention aims toprovide comprehensive agriculture assistance to members of six (6) co-operatives; approximately 1,157 farmers in two governorates in Northeast Syria (NES). Additionally, it will introduce water-saving irrigation systems and training sessions on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) underscoring a commitment to sustainable practices.

The second intervention reaffirms the commitment to prioritising the health and well-being of conflict-affected communities; “Supporting Health Services in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates”, endeavours through strategic partnerships, to sustain essential healthcare services in seven Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs) in Ar-Raqqa and a Maternity Hospital in Deir-ez-Zor.  The initiative aims to benefit 40,344 individuals, with a budget of EUR 1.8 million.

The third, “Sustainable Solar Energy Systems for Silos, Mills, and Bakeries in Northern Aleppo” is an innovative Electricity, EUR 2.5 million, budget project that aims to fortify food security in Northern Aleppo by providing sustainable solar energy systems to bakeries, mills, and silos. By enhancing bread production through renewable energy sources, the project anticipates benefitting approximately 200,000 individuals every month over its 24-month duration.

On this occasion, the SRTF Director General Eng. Hani Khabbaz released a statement: The newly approved projects reflect our unwavering commitment to sustainable solutions and the well-being of communities in Northeast and Northwest Syria. Through strategic partnerships and innovative interventions, we aim to address critical needs in the key sectors ensuring the resilience and prosperity of vulnerable populations. Together, with our dedicated partners backed up by our donors, we continue to make meaningful strides towards recovery and stability inside Syria and the region."
