Successful Completion of an SRTF Food Security Project Empowers Communities in Northeast Syria
Northeast Syria - Monday, 4 November 2024 - The SRTF is thrilled to announce the successful closure and completion of its Food Security intervention “Enhancing Food Security in Northeast Syria”, following an impressive sustainment period.
Under this intervention, a combination of hard and soft wheat was purchased, three mills were rehabilitated and milling operations were supported. Such efforts, in combination with the provision of capacity building training sessions for the relevant individuals, allowed for the production of more flour which was supplied to 23 bakeries, thereby, increasing people’s access to high-quality bread at affordable prices. This contributed to the overall aim of this intervention of enhancing food security in the area and revitalising the local economy.
The 10-month sustainment period allowed for continuing the cycle of flour and bran production. The money resulting from selling the flour and bran was used for purchasing more wheat, allowing the intervention to ensure long-term sustainability within the surrounding communities.
With a budget of around EUR 3.3 million, this intervention benefitted an average of 78,102 bread consumers and 178,676 bran consumers per month, and 153 employees at the mills, throughout the intervention’s lifecycle.
