Two State-of-the-Art Medical Waste Incineration Facilities Commence Operations in Northern Aleppo

Türkiye – Sunday, 12 January 2025 – The SRTF announced the start of operations at two medical waste incineration facilities in two locations under its Health project; “Medical Waste Management for Health Facilities in Northern Aleppo”.

This comes following a testing period which deemed the facilities operational, the delivery of four trucks to be used for the transportation of medical waste and the delivery of training sessions to the relevant staff on the collection, management, treatment and disposal of waste.

The incineration facilities have started receiving medical waste from at least 50 facilities across Northern Aleppo and have started managing and treating it, with each incineration facility having the capacity to process at least 1,000 kg of medical waste daily. Such efforts will improve overall health conditions in surrounding communities, decrease the risk of contamination, and ensure the effective treatment and disposal of medical waste with minimal risks to the environment.

The SRTF’s Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, stated: “We are proud of this achievement, which prioritizes both public health and environmental sustainability. The state of the art technology facilities under this project not only positively impact patients and residents of the surrounding communities but also contributes to environmental protection by minimizing the risk of disease spread and pollution. It exemplifies the Fund’s commitment to a multi-sectoral and comprehensive approach in its programming.”

Since the Fund’s establishment, there have been at least 35 projects and interventions in the Health sector, some of which are currently active. These have achieved impressive results including the rehabilitation of health facilities, mobile clinics and ambulances, the delivery of consultations, the supply of medication, medical equipment and medical consumables, the establishment of prosthetics centres and a Burn Hospital and the delivery of specialised surgeries by specialised expert staff.

With a budget of EUR 1.7 million, this project is expected to directly benefit around 191,625 inpatients and outpatients annually as well as 3,550 health workers within the project area.  Additionally, around one million individuals living in Azaz, Al Bab and Jarablus will benefit indirectly from improved health safety systems, regulations and enhanced medical waste treatment and disposal practices.
