Building Climate Resilience: SRTF Empowers Farmers in Northeast Syria with Smart Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture

Northeast Syria – Sunday 02 March 2025 – The SRTF is in the process of distributing 116 sets of sprinkler irrigation kits to 116 farmers in Northeast Syria, under "Agricultural Support to Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates – Phase VIII".

After identifying farmers in need based on selection criteria, including a contribution-based criterion—whereby if a farmer purchases a kit sufficient to irrigate one donum (0.1 hectare), the Fund provides an additional kit to irrigate two donums (0.2 hectares)—farmers who have received the kits have installed them on their land. Each kit includes a portable diesel water pump, latch sprinkler pipes, rotary sprinkler heads with accessories, connectors, a control valve, end caps, a pressure control regulator, a pressure gauge, a hose pipe, a sediment strainer, a hose clamp, and a mechanical water flow meter. These kits are designed for efficient irrigation, ensuring a consistent water supply, healthy crop growth, improved yields, better water conservation, and reduced use of fertilizers.

This delivery follows the distribution of around 777 metric tonnes (MT) of high-quality wheat seeds to farmers and the delivery of 12 sets of agricultural implements and equipment to six Farmers’ Cooperatives whereby each set includes a disc plough, a chisel-type cultivator, a pull type offset disc harrow, a tractor-mounted ridge, a tractor trailer seed drill, a tractor mounted PTO-driven fertiliser and seed separator, a tractor mounted PTO-driven boom sprayers for agricultural chemicals and an agricultural tipping trailer and their spare parts, which are used for land preparation, planting activities and post-harvest operations. A total of 12 tractors and their spare parts were also delivered to the six Cooperatives, which are to be used for the same purposes.

Such efforts combined will increase farmers’ productivity and improve their living conditions and livelihoods, thereby, stabilising communities in Deir-ez-Zor and Ar-Raqqa, making them more resilient.

Moustafa, a farmer beneficiary, told us: ”The SRTF distributed fertilisers and wheat seeds among us farmers which we have already used. They also distributed sprinkler irrigation kits which was a new technology in our area. It helps us conserve fertilisers and seeds. We used to irrigate our land using traditional methods which require a lot of effort and wastes fertilisers and water. With the sprinkler irrigation, I save around 70-80% of fertilisers. We can now plant potatoes and peanuts, which I never used to be able to do as a farmer, as it is very costly. We were only able to plant wheat, which does not bring us much profit, as our expenses are very high, and I used to take loans from people to buy the seeds and fertilisers.”

Mohammad, another farmer beneficiary expressed his gratitude saying: “We received fertilisers, seeds and sprinkler irrigation kits from the SRTF. This is a better technology as irrigating the land manually [using traditional methods] used to harm our crops when the water would overflow, but this way, the land absorbs the water slowly as it sprinkles. We usually plant wheat, cotton and corn, but we will be using the sprinkler irrigation to mainly plant wheat and possibly potatoes too. It does not require effort and it is cost-friendly; it saves us fuel. It is also better for the land. God bless the SRTF, I thank you as you supported us in many ways. We are always grateful for whatever additional support we receive.”

With a budget of EUR 3.1 million, such efforts directly benefit 1,127 farmers in Northeast Syria, aiming to improve wheat production, thereby, enhancing the local economy and improving food security in the region.
