Establishing Three Prosthetics Centers in Northeast Syria
Due to the conflict, and as a result of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW), around 36,000 Syrians in Northeast Syria (NES) are victims of amputation. In Ar-Raqqa alone, there are 3,700 registered amputees.
Throughout NES, thousands of ERWs still exist and will continue to wound civilians for years to come.
Currently, there are only three operating prosthetics centers serving all of NES. The existing centers lack modern healthcare methods, tools, and supplies to meet the growing demand for prosthetics.
In response to this growing issue, the SRTF approved a health intervention, “Establishing Three Prosthetics Centers in Northeast Syria”, that focuses on improving access to prosthetics in NES. This intervention will establish three prosthetics centers in Ar-Raqqa, Deir Ez-Zor, and Al-Hasakeh and provide prosthetics to those who lost limbs as a result of the conflict.
In addition to establishing the three prosthetics centers, this intervention plans to:
- Hire several individuals (including prosthetists, clinical managers, and design technicians) to produce prosthetics and provide training to patients on the proper use and maintenance of prosthetics.
- Provide basic physical therapy to prosthetics patients and help them learn how to perform basic day-to-day functions with their new prosthetics. Each center will host a physical therapy room that will be available to patients to learn these skills, as well as learn basic maintenance and upkeep of their prosthetics.
- Expand the implementing partner’s existing office that contains two high-quality 3D printers that are able to produce one prosthetic per day. This office supports a hospital in Ar-Raqqa, meanwhile the other two centers will be located near hospitals in Deir Ez-Zor and Al-Hasakeh.
Each center will have a Clinical Manager, two Prosthetists, a Design Technician, and an Office Assistant. Additionally, each center will have two 3D printers and two laptops to support design and printing.
This intervention has a duration of eight months, where the first two months will be spent setting up the centers, hiring, and train the staff, while the last six months the centers will be fully operational. With a budget of EUR 321,640, this intervention is estimated to benefit 1,260 amputees and their families.
