Provision of Maternity and Paediatric Health Services at One Hospital in Deir ez-Zor Governorate
The focus of this intervention is to support one Hospital located at the heart of a city in the northeast of Syria; home to 307,100 inhabitants. This city is the medical epicentre for all the surrounding villages and is the only city where inhabitants can commute after nightfall to receive medical attention.
This Hospital was bombed in 2017 causing serious damage to its infrastructure and suspended all its operations. After the war, International Organizations (IOs) have contributed towards the partial reconstruction of the Hospital; including the implementation of a heating system (boilers), a ventilation system, four fuel tanks, four water tanks, two elevators, a fire extinguisher system and twenty air conditioners.
This SRTF intervention will build on these rehabilitation activities to enable the Hospital to become operational again and to implement a set of basic and essential services to keep a few isolated sections for additional future services; including an operating theatre for general surgery, kidney dialysis, CT scan and an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), that may be offered by other donors.
In specific, this intervention aims to establishing the following activities:
- A 24/7 Emergency Department (ER) for non-surgical (paediatric and gynaecology) cases with one dedicated ambulance.
- Three outpatient clinics – paediatric, gynaecology and internal medicine.
- A department of radiology and a pharmacy.
- A ward for natural deliveries with a capacity of three tables and an operating theatre for emergency and elective caesarean-sections.
- Malnutrition screening for children under five years of age and PLW (Pregnant and Lactating Women) and provide treatment for MAM (Moderate Acute Malnutrition) and SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition) without complications.
- An in-patient department for paediatric care, with a capacity of 36 beds.
- Eleven incubators equipped with a phototherapy device for children who need postpartum care, and one neonate bilirubin phototherapy device for severe cases.
- An in-patient ward for patients before and after surgeries with a capacity of ten beds, including two beds for pre- and post-natural deliveries.
- A High-Dependency Unit with two beds (with one CPAP/BiPAP).
- Health awareness and health education facilities; including IYCF (Infant and Young Child Feeding) consultations.
- An incinerator to apply infection and prevention controls and medical waste management measures.
For a total budget of 1.8 million, the intervention is expected to directly benefit around 26,583 beneficiaries who are divided into four categories:
- Beneficiaries receiving consultations in the Out-Patient Department (OPD).
- Deliveries and newborns in incubators.
- Beneficiaries receiving non-surgical emergency services in the ER ward.
- Hospitalisations in the in-patient department and High-Dependency Unit (HDU).
Indirectly, the intervention will cover a catchment population of approximately 307,100 individuals (IDPs and host community members) residing to the east of the Euphrates River.
