Providing Solar Power and Clean Water to Health Centres in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor

The conflict in Syria has significantly affected electrical power generation and distribution throughout the past decade, resulting in power shortages across the country which have been affecting the provision of most public services.

With the increased demand for health services in North East Syria, health facilities are in need of urgent support for electricity and clean water, now more than ever, so such facilities are able to provide the necessary medical services to the most vulnerable patients.

Through this intervention, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) will provide solar power as well as clean potable water to health facilities in the area, in order to improve the provision of services and reduce the spread of diseases among patients and medical workers. Technical training sessions will be provided, ensuring sustainability, the reduction of running costs and the extension of the expected lifetime of these systems.

The project is expected to:

  • Supply a stable and efficient power source (solar energy) to 14 health facilities across North East Syria, in order to improve the provision of health services and enhance the sector’s capacity overall.
  • Supply clean potable water to the facilities, in order to the risk of the spread of waterborne diseases among individuals at the facilities, thereby, decreasing morbidity and mortality rates.

This will be done by implementing the following activities:

  • Recruiting the relevant and necessary staff.
  • Installing solar power systems in 14 health facilities and conducting the necessary civil works.
  • Installing water storage systems in each of the 14 facilities.
  • Installing filtration and sterilisation systems in each of the 14 facilities, to ensure the delivery of clean potable water.
  • Providing technical training sessions to the relevant staff at the facilities on the best practices for operating and maintaining the solar systems.

With a total budget of EUR 430,155, this intervention is expected to directly benefit 403 staff at the health facilities as well as an average of 20,200 patients per month, over a period of 12 months, including one month for preparation and six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, the intervention is expected to indirectly benefit over 58,000 individuals living in communities surrounding the facilities.
