Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate – Phase VII
As a result of the escalation in conflict, climate change and droughts, and the earthquake that hit the area in February 2023, Northwest Syria (NWS) has witnessed several challenges over the past few years, including a crucial one – the unstable and low cereal crop production and yield, given farmers’ restrained access to resources, inputs and markets.
In response to the aforementioned and based on the successes of its previous phases, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) has launched Phase VII of the Food Security project; “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate”, in coordination with the Syrian Public Establishment for Grains (SPEG). This project aims to improve food security and well-being as well as reactivate the local economy while ensuring long-term sustainability.
Through its activities, the project is expected to:
- Replenish stocks of soft wheat to avoid a shortage of flour supplies available for bakeries, ensuring the necessary blend for the mixture (with SPEG’s stocks of local hard wheat) to be milled.
- Maintain bread availability within the targeted communities, focusing on areas with high concentrations of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
- Maintain bread prices at affordable levels.
This will be done by implementing the following activities:
- Supplying 4,000 MT of soft wheat.
- Providing the wheat to six SRTF-supported mills.
- Delivering the milled flour to the five SRTF-supported bakeries, for bread production and distribution across several locations.
- Providing consultancy services and technical assistance regarding all inputs within the project, when required.
This is anticipated to:
- Contribute to the sustained availability of flour for bread production.
- Increase the quality and quantity of bread produced.
- Maintain affordable bread prices.
- Enhance SPEG’s capacity and profile as an accountable and legitimate public enterprise able to respond to community needs and contribute to improving food security within the region.
With a total budget of EUR 1.38 million, this intervention is expected to benefit 300,000 individuals every month, over a period of eight months which includes six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation. It will also benefit thousands of other individuals in the areas of operation through improved food security, the reactivation of the economy and long-term sustainability.
