Agricultural Support to Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates – Phase VIII

Building on the successes of its multi-phased intervention, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) has launched Phase VIII of its Agriculture intervention, Agricultural Support to Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates”.

Through this intervention, the SRTF aims to further enhance regional food security and promote stability within local communities by facilitating the continuous production of wheat. This objective is achieved by providing support to six farmers' cooperatives and their members through the provision of various agricultural inputs and machinery. Additionally, the initiative includes training sessions on Climate Smart Agriculture and establishing demonstration sites to improve harvest yields.

This intervention is expected to:

  • Improve wheat yield and production.
  • Improve regional food security.
  • Improve water management practices.
  • Promote stability and resilience within local communities.
  • Improve farmers’ capacities.

This will be done by implementing the following:

  • Providing and distributing fertilisers and high-quality hard wheat seeds to farmers.
  • Providing agricultural machinery, including tractors and seed drills, and their spare parts to farmers.
  • Supplying sprinkler irrigation kits.
  • Installing modern irrigation systems as demonstration plots in selected lands within each cooperative.
  • Supporting six farmers’ cooperatives with the necessary equipment and inputs to support farmers.
  • Establishing efficient water-irrigation demonstration sites.
  • Providing training sessions on Climate Smart Agriculture, with a focus on water-saving techniques and the best practices when using and maintaining new irrigation systems.
  • Introducing water-saving technology systems.

This is anticipated to:

  • Cultivate a total of 3,217 hectares of land with wheat in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates.
  • Improve the living conditions of community members.
  • Enhance farmers’ livelihoods.
  • Increase wheat production and reducing the cost of wheat farming.
  • Contribute to improving food security within communities and Northeast Syria at large.
  • Increase the availability of high-quality wheat within the local market.
  • Increase farmers’ resilience in searching for and adapting the best available solutions in facing the impact of climate change.
  • Improve farmers’ understanding of water-efficient technologies, enabling them to make informed decisions and successfully implement these solutions on their farms, to optimise water usage and improve crop yield.

With a budget of around EUR 3.1 million, this intervention is expected to directly benefit 1,157 farmers, over a period of 12 months. Surrounding communities will also benefit from the improved local economy and sustainable regional food security.
