Support Farmers for Wheat Crop Production in North Aleppo – Phase III
Based on the successes of its previous phases, and as wheat is a staple crop for Syrians in Syria, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) launched Phase III of the “Support Farmers for Wheat Crop Production in North Aleppo” project.
Through this project and in coordination with the Implementing Entity (IE), the SRTF aims to increase wheat production and improve livelihoods and food security in the area, given that the ongoing conflict in Syria has severely impacted wheat production and has forced farmers to lose their land.
The project is expected to:
- Increase the productivity of wheat crop in Northern Aleppo.
- Improve farmers’ livelihoods.
- Attain greater food security in the area.
This will be done by implementing the following activities:
- Identifying 2,000 eligible wheat farmers based on the selection criteria.
- Conducting awareness sessions for farmers about the project and farming activities.
- Providing 500 kg of wheat seeds to each farmer to plant two hectares (HA) of land (so 2,000 farmers can cultivate a total of 4,000 HA).
- Providing 400 kg of fertilisers to each farmer.
- Providing access to machinery services, agricultrual inputs and equipment, including tractors, harvesters, chisel cultivators, harrows, disc-plows, sprayers and spare parts, to farmers.
- Conducting a training for trainers on Climate-Smart Agriculture practices, so they can transfer the knowledge to farmers.
- Conducting mechanical pest control in targeted areas.
- Conducting chemical control for Sunn pests.
- Empowering women and female farmers who are heads of households.
This is anticipated to:
- Sustain increased wheat yields in the targeted areas.
- Strengthen the IE’s engagement in providing agricultural services to farmers.
- Contribute to regional food security through the availability of increased wheat for bread production.
- Increase farmers’ capacity to better manage resources in order to improve productivitiy.
- Introduce farming practices that can mitigate the impact of climate change on wheat production.
With a budget of around EUR 2.76 million, this project is expected to directly benefit 2,000 wheat farmers and their 10,000 family members indirectly, over a period of 18 months which includes six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation. An additional 90,000 individuals per month are expected to benefit from the increased availability of wheat and the resultant increased access to bread.
