An SRTF Agriculture Project Delivers Agrochemicals and Agricultural Inputs to Vegetable Farmers in Northern Aleppo
Türkiye – Tuesday, 27 June 2023 – The SRTF announced the delivery of agrochemicals and agricultural inputs to 2,000 vegetable farmers under its Agriculture project, “Support Farmers for the Production of Wheat and Vegetable Crops in Northern Aleppo”, today.
The agrochemicals include 50 MT of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilisers, 4,045 bottles of (250ml) fungicides and 6,045 bottles of (250ml) acaricides, ensuring that all farmers have access to high-quality resources to support harvest.
The distributed fertilisers are used to strengthen root growth, encourage blooming and improve plant health in general, thereby, boosting vegetable crop production. While the fungicides and acaricides are used to protect plants from fungal diseases and infestation, thereby, increasing yield and quality of produce.
Furthermore, the distributed agricultural inputs included 4,000 polystyrene trays, 25,000 litres of peat moss soil and 6,000 rolls (400 metres) of drip irrigation pipes. The trays are used to obtain healthy and viable seedlings to expand crop production, the peat moss soil is used to provide an optimal environment for the seeds’ growth process and the irrigation pipes are used to provide a steady and controlled supply of water for the crops. These combined improve the quality of crops produced while also reducing water waste.
This project aims to rehabilitate wheat and vegetable crop production in Northern Aleppo, by providing farmers with wheat and vegetable seeds, agrochemicals amongst other agricultural inputs. Additionally, farmers are provided with training sessions on the rehabilitation of the agriculture sector, during the project’s duration. The provision of such support and services contributes to enhancing food security in the region and ensuring the sustainability of crop production as well as their long-term availability in local markets.
Abed al Jawad, a farmer beneficiary, told the SRTF: "This is the first time for me to receive support from the Fund. I received fertilisers and the support has been excellent so far this year."
This project has a budget of EUR 3 million and will benefit 4,000 farmers (including 2,000 vegetable farmers and 2,000 wheat farmers) and their 20,000 family members directly throughout its 18-month lifecycle, which includes six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, 95,000 individuals will benefit on a monthly basis through the milling of the harvested wheat. This project will enhance farmers’ long-term crop production, allowing them to become sustainable and improve their living conditions and employment rates in the area.
