The SRTF Boosts Food Security in Northern Aleppo

Türkiye – Tuesday, 12 March 2024 – The SRTF announced the successful closure of its Food Security project: “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate – Phase V”.

Under this project, the SRTF supplied a total of 18,920 MT of soft wheat. This allowed for a total of 23,637 MT of flour to be milled and distributed to 108 bakeries, which produced thousands of tonnes of better-quality and more affordable bread throughout the project’s lifecycle. In fact, 85% of surveyed bread consumers reported feeling more financially relieved by the reduced bread prices, 74% reported they do not have to travel long distances to purchase bread, 64% feel more dignified due to their increased access to bread and 20% reported feeling safer due to the consistent availability of bread and their accessibility to it.

Additionally, under this project a warehouse was renovated, expansion works were conducted on a building to increase its storage capacity and store a mill in it, and two fixed bakeries, two pickup trucks, wheat and flour sacks, packing bags, safety tools, clothes and equipment and laboratory equipment for wheat and flour testing were procured.

One male bread consumer told us: “Providing bread at a lower price saves us at least a small amount of money that we can use for other feed needs such as vegetables and rice.”

One female beneficiary in another location told us: “The quality of the flour used to make the bread is excellent. I highly recommend continuing the use of the same quality of flour. Bread is the most important food item for my family. We consume a significant portion daily, which constitutes around 65 of our essential daily food.”

With a budget of around EUR 7.8 million, this project has directly benefitted an average of 179,066 bread consumers per month, during the mills’ operational months out of the project’s lifecycle of 25 months, across nine various locations in Northern Aleppo.
