Sustainable Solar Energy Systems for Silos, Mills and Bakeries in Northern Aleppo

The deteriorating electricity supply resulting from the ongoing conflict across Syria has forced public facilities to heavily rely on fuel generators and private electricity companies as reliable sources of electricity. This has resulted in an increase in electricity prices and production costs.

In response to this matter, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF), in coordination with an Implementing Entity (IE), has launched the Electricity project; Sustainable Solar Energy Systems for Silos, Mills and Bakeries in Northern Aleppo.

This project aims to create a hybrid system by introducing solar photovoltaic (PV) generation units to support existing electric grids and generators, which is a more reliable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution, in order to facilitate the production of bread. This will, in turn, support the Food Security sector and reduce operational costs for producing flour and bread. It will also enhance facilities’ capacities and mitigate the effects of fluctuations in energy prices and supply, which are critical to the production process.

This project is expected to:

  • Provide solar energy to flour production facilities.
  • Improve bread production across Northern Aleppo.
  • Enhance the resilience of local communities and improve their living conditions.

This will be done by implementing the following activities:

  • Installing solar power units in the IE-supported facilities.
  • Installing off-grid systems with batteries to supply the auxiliary services within the facilities.
  • Conducting the necessary civil works.
  • Providing electrical and mechanical tools, devices and test equipment for facilities.
  • Providing maintenance and cleaning tools and devices.

This is anticipated to:

  • Reduce running costs and improve the reliability of the electrical supply for the IE-supported facilities, including silos, mills and bakeries.
  • Improve the quality and quantity of flour and bread produced.
  • Reduce pressure on local networks.
  • Positively impact the environment with zero carbon dioxide emission systems.
  • Improve the IE’s capacity.

With a total budget of around EUR 2.46 million, this project is expected to directly around 200,000 individuals on a monthly basis, over its duration period of 24 months, which includes six months for post-implementation monitoring and evaluation.
