Empowering Northeast Syria: The SRTF Approves €4.96M Interventions to Boost Agriculture, WASH & Electricity Sectors

Amman – Sunday, 15 September 2024 –The SRTF is thrilled to announce the approval of two new interventions under the Agriculture and Electricity and Water and Sanitation (WASH) sectors in Northeast Syria today.

Building on the success of Phase I, Phase II of the Agriculture intervention, “Supporting Potato Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates”, aims to expand potato cultivation in certain areas across the two governorates, to strengthen regional food security, improve farmers’ livelihoods and promote agri-businesses. With a budget of around EUR 2.23 million, this intervention is expected to directly benefit 1,000 farmers in 25 Farmers’ Cooperatives, by planting 200 hectares of land, using Climate Smart Agriculture practices to ensure the effective and increased cultivation of potatoes.

In the Electricity and WASH sectors, the “Provision of Sustainable Energy and Clean Water Systems in Northeast Syria” intervention aims to mitigate the shortage of electricity and water supplies available to 22 healthcare centres, two hospitals and 37 educational facilities, by introducing solar power generation plants, Reverse Osmosis water purification systems and Atmospheric Water Generators. With a budget of around EUR 2.73 million, this intervention is expected to directly benefit at least 44,890 individuals, as it will enhance the resilience and delivery capacity of healthcare services at the centres and the operational efficiency of educational facilities and will safeguard the required access to electricity and clean water.

These newly approved interventions bring up the total budget of around EUR 274.03 million.
